One of my favorite Upland Game
birds is the White tailed
Ptarmigan. They are found above
Timberline throughout Colorado.
If you choose to pursue these
marvelous birds, you need to be in
top condition. Remember if you're
not on Top, you're too Low.
Because of this Grouse`s ability
to camouflage itself, a well
trained dog is a must. Of course
we recommend a Labrador
Retriever. As you can see in these
photographs, Ptarmigan certainly
blend in with their surroundings.
They are so well adapted they
turn White during the Winter,
and return to their Mottled Color
in the Spring.
Many Hunters make the mistake
of looking for Ptarmigan in the
Willow Thickets directly above
Timberline. The majority of the
birds I have found have been
much higher on the Mountain. If
you can find rocky areas you are
on track. They will use these
areas for shelter, and to hide from
predators.
